Where Herd Sires are Born & Maternal Females are a Priority

Welcome to Mohnen Angus!

Mohnen Angus has been in the beef business since 1986. We have held Bull Sales for the past 28 years, previously selling privately from our farm. Our genetics trace back to the renowned Bon View Farms, where Steve worked as a herdsman for five years. Steve and Kathy applied the insights Howard provided, which they used to build the registered Angus herd we have today. Our family has worked hard to develop females that produce outstanding genetics in cows, along with cultivating bulls suitable for both commercial and registered farms. Our bulls demonstrate their quality, as buyers see the results the day they sell their calves and in conversations about the excellent cows that have come from our genetics. Mohnen Angus has always been and will remain actively involved in the embryo program. We have selected our top-producing females and, to the best of our knowledge, flushed them with the leading sires of the Angus breed today to give you the best genetics possible. We stand behind our product and want you to feel 100% confident when purchasing from Mohnen Angus. We enjoy discussing cattle and are happy to answer any questions you may have, so feel free to call Steve, Josh, or John anytime. The coffee and pie are always ready, so be sure to visit the ranch and see our cattle in person. They won’t disappoint.
In 1980, Steve Mohnen began working for Howard Hillman of Bon View Angus Farms in Canova, S.D., when he was 25 years old. During this period, Steve’s father started purchasing bulls and building his own registered Angus herd, which became known as Mohnen Angus with pride.

After five years at Bon View Farms, Steve returned home to join his father. Over the following 10 years, Steve built his own cowherd and moved four miles down the road from the original homestead with his wife, Kathy.
There, the couple raised their four children: Joshua, John, Jennifer, and Jared.

Joshua, his wife Katie, and their four boys—Koye, Kade, Kase, and Kole—live on the ranch alongside Steve and Kathy, as well as John, his wife Tory, and their two children, Gage and Laynie. Jared manages cattle on the family operation while also owning and operating Dakota Ag Insurance in Mitchell, S.D. Jennifer, her husband Ty Krell, and their two children, Jake and Hadlee, live on a ranch in Sundance. Jennifer works for Wyoming Farm Bureau, and Ty serves as vice president of the Sundance State Bank.

A breed that goes above and beyond - Mohnen Angus has expanded from the six cows Steve bought in 1986 to a herd that produces nearly 500 calves in spring and 150 in fall, according to Joshua. He highlights one of the operation’s significant accomplishments as winning the 2014 National Western Stock Show Grand Champion Angus Carload Show in Denver with a set of 10 Angus bulls, all with pedigrees tracing back to Mohnen’s highly successful foundation cow, Mohnen’s Jilt 910.

“Angus cattle do so many things at a higher level than any other breed,” states Joshua. “Angus cows breed back on time. They are functional, easy-fleshing, and wean calves that grow well, sell well at market, and produce a premium beef product.”
“The Angus breed really surpasses all other breeds, and in my opinion, it’s in the lead,” Joshua adds. When it comes to their mission, Joshua notes that Mohnen Angus is focused on raising animals of consistent quality. He also emphasizes their commitment to cattle with sound feet and leg structure.
“Our motto is ‘raising quality is not our job, it’s our life,’” he says.

The older generation continues to pass their passion for the Angus breed to the next generation of Mohnens.
“The kids have the opportunity to gain more experience each year,” says Joshua. “Every year, each kid gets to keep one cow and make their own decisions. It’s a great learning tool and a good way to keep them involved and interested in the operation.”
He continues, “I hope our kids love Angus cattle as much as we do, so they can keep running Mohnen Angus for years to come. We are very excited about the future of our business and look forward to seeing the kids take it over.”

The strong demand shows the success of Mohnen Angus for their top genetics. Joshua notes that the operation hosts an annual bull production sale every second Thursday in February. February 2020 marked their 26th sale, scheduled for February 13.
“We also hold an annual female sale in September,” Joshua adds. “We achieve this by flushing over 300 embryos annually. We believe this technology helps keep our cowherd and genetics strong.”
“The industry has changed a lot, but at its core, we still need great females to make a herd successful,” Joshua says.
Recently, the operation started hosting its “Open the Gate” sale in May at their ranch in White Lake, S.D.
According to Joshua, Mohnen Angus has added a fourth sale to their lineup this year.
“This year, we’re doing something new to grow our operation,” Joshua states. “We plan to raise and develop 30 of our younger February bulls here at White Lake, then send them to Sundance for private treaty sales.”
“We’re very excited to work with ranchers in Wyoming,” Joshua adds.
